Marketing textbooks, until recently, simply ended with the consumer using a product. Today, the end of the channel now includes disposal and that often means recycle issues. In this, our final show in the Singapore series, our crew follows the recycle man in Singapore. From pickup, to the collection center, and then on to the buyers, we get a good overview of the process.
One of the biggest shifts one makes in moving from Taiwan to Singapore, is the lack of recycle emphasis. In Taiwan, like Japan, recycling is pushed to the consumers, requiring separation and special pick up times--normally daily. Both China and Taiwan charge extra for plastic bags to discourage their use, but all this simply does not exist in Singapore, as of the recording of this show. This actually creates a profit opportunity for the recycle man, who moves through residential blocks, honking a horn (a good example of classical conditioning), collecting recyclables for profit. Consumers have the convenience of never leaving home and making a few dollars.
